Study & job profiles
The planned duration of the Master's degree programme in Secondary Education (General Education) is 4 semesters. Basically, two teaching subjects are to be chosen, which are supplemented by general educational science basics, free elective subjects as well as integrated pedagogical-practical studies. The subject Design: Technology.Textiles can be combined with any other subject.
The teacher employment law stipulates that young teachers must complete a Master's degree within five years of their Bachelor's degree in order to be able to enter into permanent employment. In addition, students have to go through a one-year induction phase in which they teach regularly and are accompanied by mentors. This professional practice can be completed directly after the Bachelor's programme and recognised as an internship in the Master's programme in accordance with the respective curricular requirements and the currently applicable legal situation (University Act and Higher Education Act).
The Master's degree programme in Secondary Education (General Education) entitles the holder to full employment as a teacher for the 5th to 13th school level at:
- Special schools
- Secondary schools (MS)
- Polytechnic schools (PTS)
- General secondary schools (AHS)
- Vocational schools and colleges (BMHS) for general education subjects.
Furthermore, the Master's degree programme enables students to work in extracurricular professional fields such as design, art and cultural mediation, youth work, adult education or media work.
The programme is intended to contribute to the students' personal development and the development of social skills. The students should be enabled to perceive and help shape artistic, technical and overall social developments.
If an academic career is desired, a doctoral programme of 6 semesters can be completed with a Master's degree.

From an artistic-design perspective, the degree programme explores the question of material culture and the perception of living environments. The focus is on creative-artistic and production-technical processes as well as objects/artefacts that influence and co-determine the subject/society and the lifeworld environment. In this context, one's own creative, informed activity and active co-creation of the environment become central. This focus sets an emphasis for the creative-practical and scientific examination of materials, techniques and products, as well as for the development of artistic/creative methods and the reflection of (material) phenomena in culture and society.
The prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree programme in Secondary Education (General Education) is the completion of the relevant Bachelor's degree programme in Secondary Education (General Education) in the development network "Cluster Mitte" or another relevant Bachelor's degree programme or another equivalent degree programme at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution.
If the equivalence is basically given and only individual supplements to the full equivalence are missing, the competent body of the admitting university is entitled to prescribe additional certificates of achievement for the attainment of the full equivalence, which have to be provided in the course of the Master's degree programme.
Admission requires the passing of an admission examination to determine artistic maturity and the ability to solve design tasks in the fields of technology, architecture and/or design. This must be passed by all applicants who have not completed their Bachelor's degree in the Entwicklungsverbund Cluster Mitte.
Applicants whose first language is not German must also provide proof of German language skills at level B2.
The subject Design: Technology.Textiles must be combined with a second subject. The combination with the subject Fine Arts Education at the Mozarteum University is possible and requires proof of artistic achievements in a separate admission examination.
