The path to admission
Requirements & Registration
Details on the admissions procedure and information about the required repertoire can be found on the page of the respective study programme.
Use our course finder to take you to the page you need!
The information on "the path to admission" is general information. Not all information given here is relevant for all courses. It is therefore advisable to check the course page for specific requirements.
Overview of general information
The prerequisite for admission to a bachelor's degree programme (BA) in performance is passing an audition, and other composite parts of the entrance examination. Applicants must register online, after which an application video should be uploaded (in most cases, but not all). If the applicant passes the video screening, they will be invited to attend an audition on-site.
For admission to a master's programme (MA), candidates must have completed a bachelor's programme (BA) in a relevant subject at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g. university, college). They will also be required to pass an audition.
In order to be able to start a teacher training programme in secondary education (general education) in the Central Region, prospective students must first pass a pedagogical aptitude test. This is part of the admissions procedure for all those wishing to begin a teaching degree in any subject. Before registering for the general admission procedure, applicants must complete the online self-assessment, pay the application fee and register for the Electronic Admission Test - details can be found at https://lehrerin-werden.at
For the teaching subjects offered at the Mozarteum University (Fine Arts Education, Design: Technology.Textiles, Music Education and Instrumental Music Education) an entrance examination to demonstrate artistic aptitude is also required.
Admission to a postgraduate university course (PGL) requires the successful completion of a subject-related master's degree or diploma at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution in the respective principal study. Admission with a teaching degree, such as music education or instrumental & vocal pedagogy, is NOT possible. A prerequisite for starting the course is also passing an audition. Auditions take place once a year. All information about the audition can be found under “Information on the Admissions Process” further down on the page.
All documents submitted as part of the application process will be carefully reviewed by the admissions office. This process can take up to 4 weeks! Early registration is therefore recommended.
Application for a study programme is only possible if a degree for this study programme has not yet been obtained.
Details on the respective admission procedures, the bachelor programmes considered relevant when registering for master's programmes and information on the required repertoire can be found at the respective degree programme.

Certification & translation of foreign language documents
Authentification of a document serves to confirm the authenticity of seals and signatures. Whether the documents submitted with an application must be authenticated and translated depends on the country in which the education was completed. The authentification of the original document must be completed before translation, and the certificate of authenticity affixed to the original document. Only then can the application for admission to studies be submitted.
All documents required for the admissions procedure must be translated (after authentification) if they are not issued in German or English. This translation must be carried out by a court-certified translator. The documents should not be translated until after the authentification has been completed, as the authentification stamps must also be translated. The translation must be firmly attached to the authenticated document!
Documents from those countries with which Austria has a bilateral certification agreement are exempt from any authentification requirements (documents must, however, be submitted in the original or as a certified copy).

- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Bulgaria
- Croatia

- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Hungary

Documents from the contracting states of the so-called "Hague Authentication Convention" must be authenticated with an apostille. To have a document authenticated by an apostille, contact the foreign ministry of the issuing country. In some countries, the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Education is responsible for this. The apostille must always be presented in the original and must certify the signature on the original document, not the signature of the notary.
The Contracting States to the Hague Authentication Convention are (as of January 2024):
- Albania
- Andorra
- Antigua and Barbuda

Full authentification of certificates is required for documents from all those countries with which there is no bilateral certification agreement and which are also not contracting states to the Hague Authentication Convention.
For a full authentication of the required documents, a domestic authentification must first be obtained from the following bodies of the issuing country:
- the Ministry of Education and
- the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or in some countries the Ministry of Justice)
Finally, the Austrian representative authority (embassy or consulate) responsible for the country in which the documents are issued must endorse these authentifications. Only original documents can be authenticated.
For some countries, the authentication by the Austrian representative authority is suspended. In this case, you will need to obtain domestic authentication from both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
