The course is open to ensembles that are seriously dedicated to quartet playing and already perform to a high standard. With the aim of developing concert programmes and preparing for participation in international competitions, the main focus is on the interpretation of major works from different stylistic periods.

General information

The course is aimed at graduates of a relevant artistic study program at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution (e.g.: Bachelor's, Master's or Diploma program). The university particularly welcomes applications from established string quartets.

For admission, proof of gradution from previous degree programmes must be submitted.

A further prerequisite for admission is passing the audition. For this, an online application is required, during which the necessary documents will be reviewed. Only once documents have been submitted in the entirity and approved by the admissions office will an invitation to the audition by issued.

Admissions procedure

  • Online registration for an audition during the application period via the registration portal for applicants
    (PLEASE NOTE: Registration is only possible after submission of all required documents!)
  • Participation in the on-site audition in May/June
  • In case of a successful audition: invitation to enrol in the degree programme
  • Enrolment during the general admission period

Required documents for online registration

  • BA certificate and MA certificate or final certificate of an equivalent degree programme, if the degree programme has already been completed.
  • Confirmation of current enrolment in a Master's programme, if the study programme has not yet been completed (the transcript must be submitted prior to enrolment!)
  • Overview of subjects and grades from your BA and MA degree programmes (Transcript of Records)
  • Official confirmation of the principal study, if this is not evident from the other documents (e.g. "Bachelor of Music" is not sufficient!)

Format of documents

  • The documents can be uploaded as PDF in the application form; the video should be entered as a link.
  • If the documents are not available in German or English, an official translation must be submitted.

The audition

If an invitation to audition is issued, an instrumental audition must be performed on site to determine artistic aptitude.

An audition programme must be submitted which includes:

  • a quartet by W. A. Mozart or L. v. Beethoven
  • a quartet of the Romantic period
  • a quartet of your choice.

The performance programme should have a duration of at least 30 minutes. The audition panel will choose from the selected pieces.

Final examination

The final examination consists of passing all courses set out in the curriculum and the intermediate examination, as well as passing the final examination, which takes the form of a public concert.

The course fees are Euro 500,- per semester.

Performance opportunities at university concerts and events inside and outside Salzburg form part of the course.

    Awarding of ensemble scholarship 

    The presentation concert of the scholarship holders of the newly created ensemble scholarship A (one-year) Start Up for Ensemble(s) took place in the impressive ambience of Schloss Leopoldskron at the beginning of April. In cooperation with "The International Society of Mozarteum University Salzburg", over 44.000 euros will be made available to students or graduates of the Mozarteum University Salzburg.

    A new home - Ziyu He 

    Ziyu He was one of the youngest soloists in the Vienna Philharmonic when he made his debut at the Musikverein under Adam Fischer in 2017 at the age of just 18. The year before, he won both the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and the Yehudi Menuhin Competition, and in 2014 he was the Eurovision Young Musician of the Year. He is a violinist with the renowned Altenberg Trio.

    The guitar department of the Mozarteum University is starting spring 2024 with an extensive programme: students in the classes of Andrea De Vitis and Laura Young have the unique opportunity to showcase their talent at concerts in Italy, which are made possible as part of an Erasmus collaboration with the renowned Boccherini Conservatory in Lucca (Tuscany).
