Overview

The bachelor's degree in Instrumental Pedagogy is a fundamental qualification for those wishing to teach their instrument. Accordingly, the aim of the course is to impart the necessary artistic, pedagogical and academic competences for the teaching of music in diverse forms. Upon completing the study programme, students are qualified to teach the harpsichord, as well as their second study or specialism, in Austrian music schools.

General course information

The degree program qualifies students to teach music in music schools, in cooperation with general education schools, as freelancers, and at universities, colleges, and other post-secondary educational institutions.

In addition, it opens up many other fields of music pedagogy and music practice related to this field. These include solo music-making, ensemble and orchestral music-making, music-related research, music management, and music education in the fields of music theater, concert, press, publishing, and media.

The Bachelor's program IGP is divided into the following artistic, pedagogical and scientific module groups:

Within the framework of the elective modules (focal points), various profiles are offered, of which each student must complete at least one:

Instrument/vocals in elementary, lower and intermediate music schools (Salzburg, Innsbruck)
Choir and ensemble conducting (Salzburg, Innsbruck)
Music theory/aural training (Salzburg)
New Media (Salzburg)
Early music (Salzburg, Innsbruck)
Jazz/Pop (Salzburg, Innsbruck)
Folk music (not for ZKF folk instruments) (Salzburg, Innsbruck)
Correpetition (only for ZKF piano) (Salzburg, Innsbruck)

Upon successful completion of the program, the student is granted the teaching qualification for Austrian music schools in the respective Central Artistic Subject (ZKF) as well as in the respective elective module (focus) Second Instrument/Vocals. In addition, upon completion of the respective compulsory elective module (focus), teaching qualifications can be obtained in the focus areas of music and movement for elementary and basic levels at music schools (EMP), music theory and new media.

The bachelor's examination (= the bachelor's degree) consists of the positive completion of the courses and examinations of all modules as well as the preparation of a bachelor's thesis. Commissioned examinations include an artistic examination in ZKF at the end of the 4th semester and at the end of the 8th semester, an artistic examination in piano (compulsory subject) at the end of the 4th semester (depending on the chosen ZKF), an examination in Instrumental & Vocal Pedagogy usually at the end of the 8th semester, an examination in Subject Didactics/Teaching Practice of ZKF usually at the end of the 8th semester as well as, if applicable, scheduled examinations in the chosen compulsory elective module (focus).

letter of motivation (approx. one DIN A4 page)
(final) certificates as well as examinations and transcripts of records of all previous artistic and/or pedagogical studies
Applicants with foreign documents must enclose an official translation of their documents in German or English in addition to the original.

The documents can be uploaded as PDF files in the application form.
If the above documents are not available in German or English, an official translation must be submitted.

Information on the admissions process

Several steps are necessary for registration. Applicants who have already studied at an Austrian university start with step 3.

1. Create a basic account in MOZonline [Link]
2. in MOZonline: fill in the mandatory statistics UHstat1 (pre-registration for studies) and note the application number that you will receive by email afterwards
3. create an application account in Muvac [Link]
4. fill out your own profile in Muvac (in any case necessary: personal data, information on expertise matching the desired degree programme, in the CV: current employment and information on previous training)

During the application period:

5. selection of the desired degree programme in Muvac (Browse -> Studies)
6. Fill out the application form in Muvac ("Apply now") - in the form, the application number (see step 2) or the Austrian matriculation number must be entered in the appropriate place

Communication during the application process takes place via Muvac or email, depending on the degree programme. Please ensure that you can be contacted at the email address entered in your profile throughout the entire application process and regularly check whether you have received any new messages in Muvac. You can set your own profile to inform you of any new messages in Muvac by email (Account settings -> Notifications). If your contact details change, please update your profile yourself.

PLEASE NOTE: Registration may only take place at one study location, Salzburg or Innsbruck. Double registration at both study locations is not permitted and will be deregistered.

BA Instrumental Pedagogy - Entrance Examination - Harpsichord (principal study):

two works by J. S. Bach (e.g. from Sinfoniae, Well-Tempered Clavier, French Suites) or one work by J. S. Bach and one work from French literature, e.g. Ch. Dieupart's harpsichord suites or a work of a similar level of difficulty.
a sonata by D. Scarlatti
a work of the candidate's choice from either the Renaissance, early Baroque period, or after J.S. Bach (e.g. "Virginalists", Frescobaldi; Bach's sons)

Playing from memory is not required.

Examination requirements (not for ZKF Jazz/Pop): Three pieces of different styles must be performed at a level of difficulty of:

A baroque work (e.g. from J.S. Bach: Kleine Präludien, G.F. Telemann: Fantasien).
A movement of a sonatina or easy sonata from the classical period (e.g. L. v. Beethoven: Sonatina in F major, J. Haydn: easy sonatas).
A work from the 19th, 20th or 21st century (e.g. R. Schumann: Album für die Jugend, B. Bartok: Mikrokosmos III).

Light sight-reading is also obligatory.

Examination requirements (only for ZKF Jazz Pop): Three pieces of different styles must be performed with a level of difficulty of:

Accompaniment of a jazz standard to a sung song (singer or player is provided) with step harmony (at least with bass and guide tones) at the level of difficulty of Henry Mancini: Days of Wine and Roses, Harry Warren: There will never be another You.
Performance of a self-selected pop song (melody and chord accompaniment).
Performance of a simple classical piece at a level of difficulty by J. S. Bach: Kleine Präludien und Fughetten, Joseph Haydn: ein Sonatensatz, Robert Schumann: Album für die Jugen

Examination requirements for the written part of the examination:

Notation of melodies from memory,
Continuation of given melodies,
Finding a melody for a given text,
Notation of monophonic and easy two-part melodic and rhythmic dictations,
Forming all triads and seventh chords including inversions (especially subdominant fifths and dominant seventh chords), recognising and writing down simple basso continuo figures as well as harmony functions and levels in a musical context.

Examination requirements for the oral part of the examination:

Sight-singing,
Listening to and naming intervals and simple chord sequences,
Singing triads (in inversions) and dominant seventh chords (only in the root position),
Listening to harmonic steps and dissonant secondary notes,
extended cadence in major and minor in two different keys (on piano or guitar).

Submission of a letter of motivation for choosing instrumental and vocal pedagogy (approx. one DIN A4 page). Organisation of a practical music group work with a small group of fellow applicants, lasting approx. 5-10 minutes. The aim here is to demonstrate your own strengths in music education. The topic can be freely chosen, e.g. a warm-up, body percussion, improvisation, development of a song or simple choral piece, development of a simple chamber music piece. Interview with the examination board on the basis of the letter of motivation, the examination programme (ZKF) and the practical music group work.

All applicants whose first language is not German must provide proof of German language skills by the time of enrolment at the latest.

Required language level: at least B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR 2001)

after processing your online application: invitation to the on-site audition (the invitation is sent via Muvac)
in Muvac: acceptance or rejection of participation in the admission exam; if necessary: information on the examination programme for the audition in the main subject (ZKF)
participation in the on-site audition
upon passing the audition and obtaining a place: invitation to enrolment to the degree programme
personal enrolment during the general admission period

Once you have passed partial examination A, you will be admitted to partial examinations B-E (possibly in a different order). If the admission test is not passed, it is only possible to repeat the admission test in its entirety and only from the next academic year. It is not possible to repeat an exam in the same year. The admission test can be repeated an unlimited number of times.
