Overview

The Mozarteum's PhD programme serves to further develop students' ability to conduct independent work in the field of academia as well as to train and promote the next generation of academics following on from their diploma or master's studies. A thesis can be submitted in the subjects Music Education (Salzburg & Innsbruck), Musicology and Fine Arts (Salzburg & Innsbruck).

General course information

The academic doctoral programme (as opposed to the artistic doctoral programme), the duration of which is at least 6 semesters, was introduced to promote the next generation of academics in the following disciplines:

Art Education / Craft Education
Music Education
Musicology

The academic doctoral programme serves as a qualification for independent research activity and its application in all professional fields based on it. This degree programme also represents an additional qualification in connection with an artistic career.

Graduates are able to:

develop research questions and hypotheses in their subject area
work in a methodologically sound manner
make independent contributions to academic research

Formulate your initial thoughts on possible research questions or hypotheses and consider the subject context within which your research topic would be situated

Admission to a PhD programme requires the completion of a relevant diploma or master's degree programme at a university or a university of applied sciences, or the completion of another relevant degree programme of at least the same level of higher education at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. In case of substantial subject-related differences, supplementary examinations may be prescribed, which must be taken by the end of the second semester of the doctoral programme.

Admission to the degree programme takes place in two steps:

Examination of the prerequisites (according to university law) by the deparment of studes and examinations (submission of a degree certificate in PDF form for a subject-related Magister or Master's degree programme and command of the German language - at least level C1, Common European Framework of Reference CEFR 2001).

Proof of completed courses amounting to 10 semester hours in one of the subjects:

Art / craft pedagogy (e.g. courses from subject didactics, fine arts, art history)
Music education (e.g. courses in subject didactics, psychology of learning, music education concepts)
Musicology (e.g. courses in interpretation research, music biography, music history)

Of these courses, the successful completion of at least 6 semester hours with seminar character must be proven.

Applications for admission to the academic doctoral programme are to be submitted to the department of studies & examinations: studienabteilung@moz.ac.at.

This degree programme consists of five modules:

Module 1 - Rigorosum A (= various courses).
Module 2 - Rigorosum B (= subject examination for admission to the dissertation project)
Module 3 - Presentation at the Forum for Doctoral Students
Module 4 - Rigorosum C (= Dissertation Thesis)
Module 5 - Rigorosum D (= final oral examination by the board of examiners)
