Become a certified expert in opera pedagogy, opening doors to the world of opera, operetta and musical! This course gives you the pedagogical and artistic know-how needed to work in a variety of cultural, educational and social institutions and to reach a range of target groups. Cultural studies content and pedagogical and psychological competencies are taught in a practical way throughout the course.

To be admitted to the course, applicants must prove that they have completed a degree or course at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. If, after all applications have been received and reviewd, places on the course are still available, persons with at least 3 years of professional experience in a relevant field of activity may also be admitted to the course. Decisions on admission lie with the course directors.

The following skills and attributes are required for entry to the couse. Applicants may be required to take an aptitude test in one or more of these ares (depending on their previous academic achievements):

  • Basic competence in music theory, piano playing and singing
  • Experience in musical group leadership
  • Willingness to engage in scenic action, animation and sharpening of aesthetic sensibility.

Teaching takes place across 16 weekend modules (4 per semester) with each weekend comprising 26 hours of teaching (the equivalent of 7 semester hours); the total number of semester hours in the course is 28. The classes are held at the Mozarteum University, the Berlin State Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin. 

Registration is by means of a registration form no later than two months before the course begins.

The course fees are Euro 1,100 per semester. In addition, the ÖH (students' union) fee must be paid regularly.

Certificatiion will be based upon: passing grades in all the required courses, a final academic paper, the presntation of a teaching concept and an oral examination with an examination panel.
