Karl Zechenter is a freelance artist, director and curator in the artist group gold extra. He has been working in theaters since the 1990s and received the Ferdinand Eberherr Prize for experimental theater in 1997. With gold extra, he has been working at the interface of media, technology and society since 1998. He was artistic director of ARGEkultur from 1999-2005, director of the Offmozart Festival in 2006, founder of the basics Festival and is a member of advisory boards for the state of Salzburg.

Karl Zechenter's works have been shown at the Ethnological Museum Berlin and the ZKM Karlsruhe, as well as at Art Moscow, Games For Change Festival New York, BELEF Belgrade, studiobühne Köln, brut Vienna, Ars Electronica Nightline and the european media art festival EMAF Osnabrück. He received the art project for the Robert Jungk Year 2013 (slot machine Local Crisis Machine), the Media Prize of the State of Salzburg 2012 (game From Darkness) and the Outstanding Artist Award (Federal Ministry of Art).
He teaches at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, among others, with a focus on science & Art, as well as at the University of Salzburg.
