Opera Out of Opera II with La Bohème: A project to develop and test a young opera format: Don Giovanni in Rome, Così fan tutte in Porto, Le nozze di Figaro in Stockholm and La Bohème in Oslo and Salzburg. What began in 2018 under the project title ‘Opera out of Opera’ will be continued across Europe from 2023 to 2025. Co-funded by the European Commission's Creative Europe programme, ‘Opera out of Opera II’ builds on the results of the first project term - with the aim of developing innovative opera formats for new target groups.

The ‘Opera Out of Opera’ project was launched to inspire new generations with creative solutions for opera. The aim is to create a new, visually appealing and easily reproducible opera format that actively involves young people and offers them a modern opera experience both live and digitally.

With La Bohème, ‘Opera Out of Opera’ returns to Salzburg on 8 March 2025. The first part of the piece will be shown at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) on 19 February 2025, the second part at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, with the first act being shown in the Max Schlereth Saal, the second act in the Foyer and the third act in the Kleines Studio.

The individual acts also differ from each other in their form. The audience is sent on a journey through various rooms and forms of presentation. Sometimes Puccini's story appears in the classical manner on stage with an orchestra, sometimes on a screen, sometimes as an immersive space with a sound installation. In this way, the work is constantly deconstructed and reassembled. In terms of content, all the acts remain closely interwoven: The production attempts to draw connecting lines that hold the fragments of ‘Opera Out of Opera - La Bohème’ together like strings.

Under the direction of Mario Diaz, with an international ensemble of singing, scenography and costume design students, the young directing team with Till Ernecke and Rahel Hofbauer is developing a new production design on all levels that breaks the opera down into its individual parts in terms of content and space.

The project, which is funded by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) as part of the Creative Europe programme, brings together leading European cultural and educational institutions, including the Conservatorio di Musica ‘Santa Cecilia’ (Italy), the Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo (Norway), the Instituto Politécnico do Porto (Portugal), the Association Européenne des Conservatoires (Belgium), Nova Opera (Ukraine), since 2024 the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, which is currently in residence in Monheim am Rhein as part of Monheimer Kulturwerke GmbH, WallMuse (France) and the Mozarteum University Salzburg (Austria), which is leading the work package for digital co-creation (OPERAONLINE).
