Arieta Liatsi receives the Paul Roczek Award 2024

Every year, the Mozarteum University honours students majoring in violin who have shown particular talent and achievement with the Paul Roczek Award, which is endowed with 10,000 euros. The winner of the Paul Roczek Award 2024 is Arieta Liatsi.

Since her debut as a soloist at the age of 15 with the Thessaloniki State Orchestra in the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Arieta Liatsi has performed with orchestras such as the Salzburg Soloists Orchestra, the Mainz University Orchestra and the Casalmaggiore International Festival Orchestra. She has been invited to participate as a young soloist at music festivals such as Musiktage Mondsee, Attergauer Kultursommer, Klassik im Burghof and the Kitzbühel Summer Concerts. In February 2024, she made her debut as a soloist at the Megaron Concert Hall in Athens, performing works by H. W. Ernst and C. Franck. Her upcoming concerts include six performances with the Thessaloniki State Orchestra on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's birth, where she will perform Ravel's Tzigane, as well as her appearance at the Festival dos Capuchos in Lisbon, Portugal.

She has been honoured with first prize at various competitions in Greece, including ‘Maria Herogiorgou-Sigara’, ‘Bachauer Junior’, the 40th Panhellenic Music Competition ‘Bachauer Junior’, and the ‘Bachauer Junior’. Panhellenic Music Competition ‘PHILON’ and ‘Tasos Pappas’. She was also a finalist at the Classic Pure Vienna International Music Competition. In 2023, she won first prize at the Kaloy Foundation's youth competition ‘Listening to the Youth’, which earned her numerous concerts and recordings and established her as an up-and-coming artist on the Greek music scene.

Arieta was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2001 and began violin lessons at the age of six at the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki, where she also received her violin diploma (with honours and 1st prize) in the class of Andreas Papanikolaou and Iren Topouria. She began her studies at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Prof. Benjamin Schmid and completed her Bachelor's degree in 2023. She is currently completing her master's degree in the class of Benjamin Schmid and Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. Arieta has received several scholarships from the university, including the regular scholarship (twice), the one-off scholarship fund and the merit scholarship. She regularly takes part in festivals such as the Casalmaggiore International Festival, Hellensmusic, Kalamata International Music Days and Verão Clássico, where she was also awarded 2nd prize, and performs alongside renowned musicians such as Julien Quentin, Benjamin Schmid, Bruno Delepelaire, Matthias Bartolomey and Ariane Haering. In addition to her regular studies, she has attended masterclasses with renowned violinists such as Leonidas Kavakos, Christoph Poppen, Josef Špaček, Mischa Maisky, Ilya Grubert, Stephan Picard, Kurt Nikkanen, Noé Inui and George Demertzis. Arieta regularly performs worldwide, including in Greece, Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France, Poland and the UK. 

From 2021 to 2024, Arieta was a member of the piano trio Trio Callas (and founding member) with Bella Schütz and Lucas Garcia Muramoto, with whom she gave concerts worldwide, including a tour in Japan in summer 2023 and a concert as part of the Mozarteum Foundation concert series in March 2024. The trio achieved outstanding success in international competitions, including the 21st Kiejstut Bacewicz International Chamber Music Competition in Łódź, Poland, and the FNAPEC competition in Paris, France. Arieta is also an active member of the Mozarteum University Salzburg Chamber Orchestra and has participated in numerous projects, including operas and chamber music concerts in Salzburg and at the Chigiana International Festival in Italy. Since 2024, she has also been a member of the newly founded Ensemble for Contemporary Music at the Mozarteum University.

Arieta Liatsi is currently studying at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Benjamin Schmid.
