Heiko Voss studied dramaturgy, musicology and modern German literature at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and at the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding.He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and worked as a dramaturge on the feature film production Das Zimmer im Spiegel while still a student.
At the end of his studies, Heiko Voss was hired as a dramaturge at the Heidelberg Theatre in 2008/09 before moving to the Salzburg State Theatre for two seasons. He has been a dramaturge at Freiburg Theatre since the 2011/12 season, initially under the directorship of Barbara Mundel and since the 2017/18 season under Peter Carp.In February 2015, he staged Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore here, making his directorial debut as part of a directing duo with Rudi Gaul. He has taught at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg and has held a teaching position at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg since the 2013/14 winter semester. Guest engagements as a production dramaturge have taken him to the Munich Biennale for New Music Theatre and the Konzert Theater Bern. Since the 2019/20 season, Heiko Voss has been a member of the artistic management team at Theater Freiburg as head dramaturge of the music theatre department.
