The Senate is one of the three leading collegial bodies of the Mozarteum University Salzburg, along with the Rectorate and the University Council. The election of the 18 members of the Senate takes place in the respective curiae - it is thus composed of nine representatives of the professors, four representatives of the lecturers of the Mittelbau and one representative of the university employees. In addition, there are four students who are delegated to the Senate by the Austrian Student Union.

More courage to be open to the world

Since June 14, 2023, a right-wing populist party has been a legitimate part of the Salzburg state government. The Senate of the Mozarteum University Salzburg is following with concern the extremist expressions and exclusionary attitudes that are thus finding their way into key political positions in our federal state, not least with a view to the signal effect of this coalition in terms of federal policy and its international external impact.

Protest against the closure of the RSO

The Senate of the Mozarteum University joins the protests against a closure of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra with all vehemence. The RSO Vienna forms an indispensable building block of the Austrian cultural scene and functions especially and above all in the field of new music as an important commissioner and premiere performer.

Honorary professorship awarded to Maria Kalesnikava

Since the beginning of the year, the project "Practicing Care" has been focusing on the transnational social responsibility of a university of the arts with a variety of activities. Exemplary for these activities is the awarding of an honorary professorship by the Senate of the Mozarteum University to the Belarusian flautist, pedagogue and civil rights activist Maria Kalesnikava, who was sentenced to 11 years of penal colony in her home country. Dorothee Oberlinger and Olga Shparaga, among others, will participate in the program of the ceremony on October 30.

    Autonomy under threat?

With the takeover of the University of Theater and Cinematography Budapest by a foundation close to the government, a movement is beginning in Hungary that has long since become a European issue - the preservation of the autonomy of the university and education.
