Music Engraving in the 21st Century
Developments and Perspectives

January 17th – 19th, 2020
Mozarteum Salzburg, Austria

Conference Invitation

Computers are everywhere today. Even in the music world, computers have become a tool used for many purposes; especially for music engraving, they are now indispensable. The old craft of music engravers has become extinct, and we now rely on programs to apply the knowledge and aesthetics accumulated over centuries. This brings opportunities and challenges that have to be considered as we head towards the future of musical applications in the digital age.

The various talks will try to highlight these aspects from different perspectives within two days of the conference. We are also happy to be able to offer workshops and presentations of music notation software. In particular, we look forward to the presentation of the new music notation flagship Dorico 3 by Steinberg Media Technologies, the company which generously supports the conference with software licenses for the university's MediaLab.

The third day is our Unconference Day; the current plan is to hold events for LilyPond, Frescobaldi, and the Music Engraving Tips Facebook group.

The keynote speaker will be Elaine Gould, author of “the” authoritative book on music engraving, Behind Bars, discussing the value of high-quality music engraving.

There are no entrance fees to the conference. However, we ask for an informal application via e-mail to notensatz-konferenz@moz.ac.at. If you want to actively participate in one of the workshops held at the MediaLab, please tell us – the number of slots is limited, and interested people will be ranked according to the arrival time of e-mail answers.

Conference languages will be German and English.
