Barbara Lübke-Herzl was born in Wiesbaden (Germany) and studied Cello in Würzburg, Freiburg and Düsseldorf with Johannes Goritzki and later on with the Amadeus Quartet in Cologne. At the age of 18 she played on concert tours throughout Europe and America as the solo cellist for the Cologne Chamber Orchestra. In 1978 she was appointed to be the solo cellist for the Camerata Salzburg by Sandor Végh and shortly after joined the Pro Arte Quartet. The more than 20 years she was playing with this ensemble were shaped by extended concert tours, which lead them to the most influential music stages and chamber music festivals in Europe, including Vienna, Budapest, Paris, London, Athens and Berlin. In 1991 they gave their debut at the Salzburg Festival, followed by multiple performance at the Salzburg Mozart Week and in the great hall of the Wiener Musikverein. Raphael Kubelik dedicated his 5th string quartet to the Pro Arte Quartet. Their exclusive contract with RCA Records, which included comprehensive recordings of all of Mozart’s quartets, represents the renowned position of the ensemble. Since 2002 she plays in multiple chamber music formations and went on concert tours to Japan, Taiwan and Korea.
She is playing with many acknowledged and renowned musicians including Benjamin Schmid, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Sabine Meyer, Eduard Brunner, Hermann Baumann and Julius Berger. In 2001 she started expanding her focus on teaching and is now leading a cello class in Salzburg. She is also regularly teaching at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum as well as Austrian Master Classes, Musikakademie Tirol and Masterclass Musiktage Seefeld. Since 2015 she is working as a university lecturer at the Pre College of the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg.
