Bachelor programme / Master programme Orchestra Conducting

The study of orchestral conducting serves artistic maturity and independence, the capacity for critical reflection and self-evaluation, the artistic and scientific ability to develop musical works of art of all epochs, and the ability to perform artistic, educational and organizational tasks within cultural life.
The total amount of the Bachelor's degree in orchestral conducting is 180 ECTS credits. This corresponds to a planned study duration of 6 semesters.

The aim of the bachelor's degree in orchestral conducting is practice-oriented and scientifically sound vocational training for the following fields offering students:
- conductor / conductor
- Opera Kapellmeister / Opera Kapellmeister,
- Ensemble leader / Ensemble leader,
- accompanist / accompanist.

The total amount of the Master's program is 120 ECTS credits.
This corresponds to a planned study duration of 4 semesters.


The aim of the master's program is to deepen and supplement the scientific and artistic vocational training on the basis of subject-specific Bachelor's programs. The master's program in orchestral conducting qualifies students to practice for the following fields offered to students:
- conductor / conductor,
- Opera Kapellmeister / Opera Kapellmeister,
- Ensemble leader / Ensemble leader,
- accompanist / répétiteur,
- teaching in orchestra and ensemble direction.
The prerequisite for admission to the bachelor's program in orchestral conducting is passing the admission test to determine artistic aptitude in the central artistic field. In addition, the examination of the knowledge in music theory (composition and ear training), piano score and sheet play, piano playing, and an instrument and the knowledge of German (for applicants whose first language is not German).


Admission to the Master's degree program in orchestral conducting is dependent on the completion of a relevant Bachelor's degree program and the passing of the admission examination to determine artistic aptitude in the Central Artistic subject.
Internal as well as external applicants have to demonstrate the artistic potential to master the Master's degree within the admission exam. As well as for the bachelor program, corresponding knowledge of German is required.
