The Mannheim Orchestra flourished from 1740 onward under the reign of the Elector Palatine Karl Theodor and the leadership of J. Stamitz. It was comprised by musicians from Belgium, Austria, Eastern Europe, Italy...Famous for its hitherto unknown dynamic expression ranging from the softest pianissimo to the loudest fortissimo, and for the touching sound of its crescendo, the Mannheim orchestra was one of the most renowned of the period. C. Barney after having heard this amazing ensemble called it “an army of generals”!
